Five rushed to hospital including two children after car ploughs into pedestrians on busy Edinburgh street | The Sun

FIVE people were rushed to hospital after a car ploughed into pedestrians on a busy Edinburgh street.

Mercy crews were scrambled to Cowgate in the capital following the two-vehicle smash between a car and a taxi.


Rescue crews shut down the road as the emergency incident unfolded.

Cops today confirmed two women aged 50 and 42, a 54-year-old man, an 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl were rushed to hospital after being struck by a Volkswagen Golf.

The car also struck a stationary taxi being driven by a 50-year-old man.

The 50-year-old woman’s condition is described by hospital staff as stable.

The others were released after treatment. The driver of the taxi was uninjured.

Officers said a 53-year-old man has been arrested and released pending further enquiry.

Revellers were seen observing the crash scene as they poured out of nearby pubs.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.55pm on Thursday, 2 November, officers were called to a report of a road crash on Cowgate, Edinburgh.

"The pedestrians were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. The 50-year-old woman’s condition is described by hospital staff as stable.

"The others were released after treatment. The driver of the taxi was uninjured.

"A 53-year-old man has been arrested and released pending further enquiry. The investigation is continuing."
