Parking mad! Police hunt for driver of Mercedes car which was dumped on train tracks after coming off the road and down an embankment in Cornwall

  • The driver of the black Mercedes is being sought out by police in Cornwall
  • The incident caused major disruption on Sunday as it closed part of the rail line
  • A replacement bus and taxi service was operated by Great Western Railways

Police are on the hunt for the ultimate bad parker after a car was abandoned on train tracks at the bottom of a steep embankment in Cornwall.

The driver of the Mercedes is being sought by Devon and Cornwall Police, who said enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Police believe the driver left the road and sped straight down the embankment and onto the tracks.

The car was discovered late at night in pitch darkness in the Carbis Bay area, just a mile from St Ives.

The car was discovered at around 2am on Sunday night, and closed the entire line between St Erth and St Ives on Sunday

The Roads Policing Team quipped that the driver did not ‘hang around to help us with our enquiries’, and are appealing for information from the public.

Images in the light of day show the black vehicle covering more than half of the rail line, with the bonnet wide open.

The car is thought to have been abandoned at around 2am on Sunday.

Due to the vehicle blocking the lane until it could be recovered, no trains were able to run between St Erth and St Ives throughout Sunday.

A spokesperson for Great Western Railways, which operates the line, said: ‘Overnight a car was driven on to the track and abandoned.

Network Rail are said to have made arrangements for the vehicle to be moved overnight on Sunday

‘Network Rail are making arrangements to have the car moved, but the car is in a place that means the recovery will be difficult.’

Network Rail are understood to have plans to recover the vehicle overnight.

They said they ‘hoped’ the services would be able to run as normal on Monday.

Devon and Cornwall Police’s Roads Policing Team shared the images on social media, writing: ‘Tickets please! The driver of this vehicle ended up obstructing rail tracks at #CarbisBay, having left the road and down an embankment.

‘Unfortunately they didn’t hang around to help us with enquiries. Enquiries ongoing.’

A replacement bus service has been in operation for those with tickets to travel on Sunday.

Some taxis were also laid on by the train operator.
