THE life of one of the most notorious criminals in US history, Jeffrey Dahmer has become the subject of a new Netflix series.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, tells the story of Dahmer, nicknamed "The Milwaukee Cannibal."

When did Jeffrey Dahmer go to prison?

Dahmer was arrested on July 22, 1991, after one of his victims, Tracy Edwards, managed to escape and led officers to his apartment.

While searching his home, officers discovered a bedside table drawer full of disturbing Polaroid photographs of his victims and their dismembered bodies.

By September 14, 1991, he was charged with 16 murders, many of them committed at his apartment in Milwaukee in the US state of Wisconsin.

He was given 16 consecutive life terms, with the last one being in May 1992, for the murder of his first victim hitchhiker Steven Hicks, 18.

Why did Jeffrey Dahmer get sent to prison?

The sadistic serial killer drugged, raped, murdered, dismembered and ate 17 men and boys from 1978 to 1991.

Dahmer would lure his victims – almost all of them from ethnic minority or LGBT communities – back to his apartment, often offering to pay them in return for nude photographs.

He would then drug their drinks before carrying out his evil acts, such as drilling holes in their skulls while they were still alive and pouring acid onto their brains.

He would also keep body parts as souvenirs, including skulls and genitals.
