Washington lawmakers gathered at the National Cathedral today for a memorial service honoring Queen Elizabeth II, but none of the living former presidents who were invited chose to attend.

Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton and Carter were all invited to the service after missing out on invitations to the Queen’s State Funeral in London earlier this week along with the former leaders of other nations.

While Carter, 97, was never expected to attend Wednesday’s service in Washington, the presence of the other four living former presidents was hoped for. It’s unclear why none chose to be there.

During the service on Wednesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced a lawsuit against Trump – who had been posting on Truth Social earlier in the day about Putin’s threat of nuclear war.

James accused Trump and his three adult children of fraudulently inflating their wealth in order to secure investment in their family business for at least ten years.

Vice President Kamala Harris was the  most senior US official at the DC service. She attended with her husband, Doug Emhoff, sitting in the front row with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Readings and prayers were delivered by the British Ambassador to the US Dame Karen Pierce, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy James Roscoe, the Dean of Washington Cathedral, the Very Reverend Randolph Marshall Hollerith and the Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry, the Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church.

The service was laid on in Washington DC by the British Embassy and Washington National Cathedral

Former President Jimmy Carter, 97, was not able to attend the service. He paid tribute to the Queen with a statement following her death in which he praised her ‘dignity, graciousness and sense of duty.’ He remains at home in Georgia with his 95-year-old wife, Rosalynn.

All five living former presidents issued moving statements in the immediate aftermath of Her Majesty’s death on September 8th. They each visited Buckingham Palace during their time in office.

In a heartfelt and moving piece written exclusively for DailyMail.com, former President Donald J. Trump said meeting the Queen was one of the ‘most extraordinary honors’ of his life.

‘The whole of civilization is in mourning. The passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the enlightened monarch who reigned over the United Kingdom for 70 years, is a loss felt by billions around the world.

‘Few in history have more fully exemplified the traits of dignity, steadfastness, resolve, duty, and patriotic devotion.

‘Spending time with Her Majesty was one of the most extraordinary honors of my life.

‘As we grieve, we are comforted that King Charles III will be a great and outstanding successor to his cherished mother. Melania and I were blessed to get to know him well when we visited England.

‘He dearly loves the U.K. and its people. I know he will prove to be an inspiration to the British People, and that under Charles’s reign, they will continue to persevere through all challenges, and push relentlessly onward toward their great destiny in which Queen Elizabeth II so deeply believed.

‘God bless the Queen. God bless her family. God bless the United Kingdom,’ he wrote.

Queen Elizabeth II met President Trump first in 2018 at Windsor Castle. She welcomed Trump and Melania to Buckingham Palace during a State Visit the following year.

In one of the most well-known images from that visit, the pair are shown giggling and clinking glasses at a formal dinner.

Former President Barack Obama met with the Queen four times; 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016.

He spoke fondly of her long before her death, comparing her to his grandmother who was ‘straight-forward’ and ‘didn’t suffer fools’.

President George W. Bush welcomed the Queen to the White House for a visit in 2007 while President Clinton brought Hillary and Chelsea – then aged 20 – to meet Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace during a visit to the UK and Ireland in 2000.

In his statement following her death on September 8, Clinton hailed her ‘unfailing grace’, tweeting via The Clinton Foundation: ‘Throughout her remarkable 70-year reign, she led Britain through great transformations with unfailing grace, dignity, and genuine care for the welfare of all its people.

‘In sunshine or storm, she was a source of stability, serenity, and strength.’
