'Missing' Rudy Farias who 'vanished' 8 years ago was 'living at home all along' – as cops slammed for not charging mom | The Sun

July 7, 2023

A TEEN who vanished eight years ago was actually living at home the whole time, it has been revealed.

It comes as police said Rudy Farias, now 25, had only disappeared for one day in 2015 but he and his mom had maintained the ruse until now.

Despite cops saying it had all been a hoax, no charges were filed against Janie Santana or her son – sparking outrage from her family.

Santana's family said they suspected Farias was not missing and blamed her for keeping him away from them all these years.

Farias' aunt Sanchez Rodriguez said: "We're upset that (authorities) are not going to do anything."

Farias was 17 when in 2015 he was declared missing by his mother, who said he disappeared from their home in Houston, Texas, while taking his dogs on a walk.

But on Sunday, cops found him lying on the ground outside a church and his mom claimed he had cuts and bruises all over his body.

His reappearance after so many years was hailed as a miracle – but the case took a shocking turn this week when police revealed it had been a ruse.

Neighbors claimed Farias had been living at home the whole time.

Kisha Ross told local ABC affiliate KTRK: "That boy has never been missing. He used to come in my garage, chill with my cousin, son, and daughter."

Houston activist Quanell X then claimed Farias told him his mom was hiding him inside her home where she treated him like a slave.

He told Fox affiliate KRIV: "He said that she would make him sleep in the bed with her.

"He said that she made him play daddy. He said that he didn't like getting in the bed with her."

But at a news conference the next day, investigators denied claims that Farias confided in them about any abuse.

Houston Police Lieutenant Christopher Zamora said: "Based on Rudy’s interview, there were no reports of sexual abuse reported.

"If there is a disclosure made, we will continue to investigate. The investigation is active, and we will continue to follow those leads."

Houston Police Sergeant Stephen Jimenez added: "I’m trained to listen for probable cause.

"I’m trained to listen for statements that can help me get charges or move forward with a case and no. There was no statements made during this investigation so far [regarding sexual abuse]."

'MISSING HOAX'

Police said on Thursday that Rudy wasn't missing for eight years as the public was led to believe by his mother.

He returned home the day after his mom reported him missing in 2015, cops said, and some have now dubbed the case a missing person hoax.

Quanell X told NewsNation-Banfield on Thursday night: "I believe Rudy is absolutely a victim."

"And Rudy said this, let me make this point, he said: 'I was tired of feeling like a slave. I was tired of being her slave.'

"He said: 'But I don't want my mother to go to jail. I don't want my mother to go to prison.'"

Farias spent several days at the hospital before he and his mother were questioned by police as investigators try to piece together what happened in the eight years after he was reported missing.

In addition to saying Farias didn't disclose any abuse to investigators, police also declined to press charges against his mother, despite the fact that she deceived cops by maintaining that he was missing.

The investigation is still ongoing, however.

Quanell said that the Houston Police Department sat in on the conversation between himself and Farias and heard everything he had to say about his relationship with Santana.

"He [Rudy] was very particular and clear about his experiences with his mother," Quanell said.

"This case needs to be prosecuted."

MORE RED FLAGS

Cops have said that both Rudy and his mother gave false names during multiple run-ins with police over the years.

“During these contacts, fictitious names and date of births were given — misleading the officers — and Rudy would remain missing,” Zamora said.

Meanwhile, a private investigator who worked on the case from the beginning revealed more red flags that popped up almost immediately.

Brenda Paradise volunteered with an organization that worked to find Farias, according to NewsNation.

Paradise claimed that mom Santana gave volunteers conflicting information about Farias, including the year he was born.

When Farias was found outside of the church, Santana was reportedly there before first responders, Paradise said.

Neighbors also said that Farias was never missing.

“He used to come in my garage, chill with my cousin, son, and daughter,” neighbor Kisha Ross told KTRK.

“That boy has never been missing.

"Sometimes he would go to the park by himself."

Another neighbor spoke anonymously but said he, too, had seen Farias over the years.

"I was just shocked someone over here was missing, and we see him," he said.

"It's shocking to everyone."

When KTRK spoke to Santana outside of her home, she claimed that the man her neighbors had seen was a nephew living with her – not Farias.

Rudy is now staying with a family friend, separated from his mother, according to KRIV.
