Man charged after allegedly shooting drivers with nail gun on the M1 motorway

Police have charged a man after he allegedly shot two men with a nail gun while driving on the M1 Motorway on the NSW Central Coast.

On Monday afternoon, police were called to the motorway following reports a passenger in a white Mitsubishi truck was firing a nail gun at passing cars.

A 57-year-old man, driving on the motorway near Somersby with his window down, was allegedly shot in the right arm.

A short time later, a 52-year-old man felt something hit the top of his head “which caused him to briefly lose control of his vehicle” while driving on the M1 near Ourimbah, police said.

The man told police he looked towards the passenger side of his car to see a man leaning out of a truck to fire further nails at his vehicle, causing the window of his Toyota RAV4 to shatter. NSW Police confirmed the injured men were not known to the alleged attacker.

Shortly after the attacks, police found a vehicle at the Sparks Road commuter car park, just off the M1 in Jilliby.

As police spoke with the people in the truck, a 19-year-old man ran from the scene and climbed over a wire fence.

Officers chased the man on foot for a short time and used capsicum spray while arresting him.

The man was taken to Wyong Police Station and charged with two counts of being armed with the intent of committing an indictable offence; two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm; two counts of malicious damage; and for an outstanding warrant.

He was refused police bail and will appear before Wyong Local Court on Tuesday.

Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to contact Tuggerah Lakes Police.
