Four-bed bungalow built on 1,800-year-old Cornish hill fort and completely secluded from neighbours hits the market for £1.55m

  • Planning permission for the site was granted in the 1970s and would be unlikely to get today

A modern house built on a scheduled ancient monument, described as ‘the most perfect round in the district’ by English Heritage, has gone on sale for £1.55 million.

The four-bedroom bungalow, situated in the Cornish village of Mawnan Smith, was built on the site of a 1,800-year-old fortified hill fort.

Planning permission was granted more than 40 years ago to build the house.

Estate agents Lillicrap Chilcott say it is a ‘unique opportunity’ as it would be unlikely to get planning permission for such a property today.

The property has a one-bedroom annexe which could be used as a holiday let for additional income

Rounds were a type of embanked enclosure, typical of the Iron Age and post-Roman period. They were often agricultural settlements.

The secluded property is situated in 2.5 acres of land and boasts views of Falmouth Bay.

It has undergone a complete refurbishment and includes a kitchen/dining room, a sitting room, conservatory, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a garage, a boatstore and a greenhouse.

It also had a one-bedroom annexe which could be used as a holiday let.

Dominic Skerry, from Lillicrap Chilcott said the property was built in the middle of the round, so there are ‘sweeping lawns’ and a ‘bank of trees’, with a gap with a ‘great view of the sea’.
