EXCLUSIVE: Roy Chubby Brown gig at family hotel is CANCELLED amid parents’ fury over controversial comedian being set to perform at Lanzarote venue hosting young children

  • Roy Chubby Brown previously blasted ‘cancel culture’ after venues banned him
  • His act often contains controversial jokes, some of a sexually explicit nature

A gig by controversial comedian Roy Chubby Brown has been cancelled at a family hotel in Lanzarote after parents complained it was a ‘disgusting’ act to hold in a venue which hosts young children.

Roy Chubby Brown, real name Royston Vasey, 78, had been booked to perform at the HL Rio Playa Blanca hotel at the start of September, sparking concerns children would be exposed to his ‘offensive’ material.

The hotel, which is billed as a holiday village, or family-orientated hotel, charges from £700 per person for a seven-day all-inclusive package.

MailOnline understands tickets for the event, which was organised directly by the hotel, began at £35, but following the outrage from parents it has now been cancelled.

Brown is best known for his divisive act which often includes sexually explicit and controversial humour – but his manager assured fans online he would ‘never’ perform where children could hear.

The show is being advertised as having a resident discount

A spokesperson for travel agent TUI, which sells package holidays to excited families for the resort, told MailOnline: ‘We would like to thank our customers for raising their concerns regarding this performance organised by the hotel.

‘We can confirm that this performance will no longer be taking place’.

Earlier MailOnline reported parents’ concerns that children would be exposed to age inappropriate content.

Reacting to the news of the event, one parent said: ‘Surely not! I’ve seen Chubbs 3 times and I would NOT take me kids to see him. I’m not easily offended but jeez come on!! He’s ruthless!’

Another said they would not pay to see the comic, but: ‘I’d pay to get rid of him.’

After the date was announced on the comedian’s social media last week, people took to online social media groups to alert other holidaymakers to the situation.

One parent spoken to by MailOnline said: ‘I think it’s outrageous that this comedian thinks it’s suitable to tell his foul mouthed stories in a hotel that’s being sold to families.’

They added online: ‘Good luck to anyone going to the Holiday Village in early September. Britons number one adult stand up comedian is booked to do a show in the amphitheatre.

‘It’s not a soundproof structure so I guess the kids will be coming home with a few more new words than Hola.’

Others described the choice as ‘disgusting’ and said: ‘That’s shocking, he’s horrific, I would be complaining.’

Another outraged parent added: ‘How on earth did they approve this surely they had to have been asked! What on earth is going through the hotel’s mind agreeing to host this in a family complex?’

Some who had booked holidays at the hotel also expressed anger towards travel firms.

TUI told MailOnline that it had listened to its customers concerns and contacted the hotel, who have confirmed the event is no longer going ahead (Pictured: Roy Chubby Brown)

One woman said: ‘TUI need to do something about it,’ while another said the hotel had ‘well and truly ditched the holiday village tag’.

The show was set to take place on September 7, hosted by Gary Gobstopper.

Roy Chubby Brown’s manager Ritchie Hoyle released a statement online after the parents’ concerns were reported, which read: ‘There is NO WAY! that Roy would perform anywhere where children could hear the show or are involved.. or for that matter where anybody who Roy’s comedy is not their cup of tea could hear the show!

‘I think you know Roy and myself by now regarding not offending anyone, let alone children!!

‘I am in communication with the Lanzarote promoter and hotel management getting confirmation that only people who know exactly what they are getting will be able to hear Roy’s performance! and certainly NOT children!!

‘To say I’m shocked is an understatement! that anybody could even think Roy or myself would allow that to happen!’

Brown has hit headlines previously after slamming ‘cancel culture’ which he says has seen him banned from venues across the UK.

Just this week another venue, the Rhyl Pavilion, told him he would not be invited back to the venue because the show was ‘no longer fitting’.

A statement posted on Facebook by manager Mr Hoyle claimed the venue turned down a request for a 2024 show as it does not align with its ‘inclusive programme’.

Other venues to have recently confirmed Brown is not welcome include Crewe’s Lyceum Theatre and the Empire Theatre in Consett.

A review of Brown’s show in the Telegraph in January claimed his act included gags about the Holocaust and spiking women’s drinks, and that he used the p-word and ‘a variation on the n-word’ live on stage.

He has previously been accused of using other racial slurs and joking about the AIDS crisis.

Roy Chubby Brown and the Rio Playa Blanca hotel have been contacted for comment.
