Drug driver caused crash then pulled over to attempt to rape passenger

Drug driver, 33, who caused motorway crash before pulling over to attempt to rape his passenger is jailed for six years

• Jason Holmes was jailed for six years and eight months for a string of offences
• The 33-year-old was high on drugs when he crashed into a car on the motorway
• He then attempted to rape his passenger before attacking the other driver who tried to intervene and a second driver who had pulled over after seeing the crash

A driver has been jailed for attempting to rape his passenger after causing a crash on the motorway while high on drugs.

Jason Holmes, 33, ploughed into the back of a silver car on the M180 in south Yorkshire and both drivers pulled over onto the hard shoulder, along with a witness to the incident.

Holmes then dragged his female passenger down the embankment where he removed their clothes and sexually assaulted the victim and strangling them until they lost consciousness.

The two other drivers who had pulled over then attempted to intervene and were attacked by Holmes who left one with damage to his teeth and to his vehicle. 

Holmes, from Scunthorpe, was jailed for six years and eight months after pleading guilty to charges of attempted rape, dangerous driving, sexual assault, two charges of causing actual bodily harm and assault by beating.

Grimsby Crown Court heard that just the crash took place just after 12pm on September 27 last year, when Holmes was travelling towards the junction with the M18, in between Hatfield and Thorne. 

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: ‘Holmes forced himself on his passenger, sexually assaulting them and strangling them with both his hands until they lost consciousness.

‘Holmes dragged his victim down an embankment where he forcibly removed their clothes and attempted to rape them.’

The drivers of both the other vehicles were then assaulted by Holmes before police arrested him at the scene.

DC Stephen Barnes, leading the investigation for South Yorkshire Police, said: ‘The victim had to go through an awful and harrowing ordeal which will stay with them forever, and we commend their bravery in helping us with the investigation, re-living those frightening moments and helping us to prepare the case to get their attacker jailed.

‘Thankfully, Holmes admitted the offences and spared the victim having to relive those moments yet again in a court room. We hope that they can now start to move on from this and look forward, rather than back.

‘We would also like to thank the victims who were assaulted by Holmes for their help and hope that they feel some form of justice has been handed down so that they, too, may be able to move on with their lives.’

Holmes has been sentenced to six years and eight months in prison for the string of offences and is required to register under the Sexual Offences Act indefinitely.

On release from prison he will also be disqualified from driving for a minimum of 18 months, and will be the subject of a restraining order preventing him from going near the victim.
