Amplify Pictures Joins Broadway’s ‘Gutenberg! The Musical’ As Co-Producer, Forms Partnership With Recently Founded Folk Productions
October 3, 2023EXCLUSIVE: Amplify Pictures, the the independent content studio behind HBO’s surfing series 100 Foot Wave, is diving deeper into live stage productions, signing on as a co-producer of Broadway’s Gutenberg! The Musical! and, in a separate deal, forming a production and financing partnership with Folk Productions, the Broadway producing team of Eric Kuhn and Tre’ Scott.
The announcement came today from Amplify’s CEO Joe Lewis, who previously collaborated with Kuhn and Scott as co-producers on A Strange Loop, winner of the 2022 Tony Award for Best Musical.

The partnership with the recently founded Folk Productions marks a significant expansion of Amplify Pictures’ theater production division. “This is an exciting moment for theater makers who have something to say that’s impactful and wildly creative,” said Lewis in a statement. “The live entertainment landscape is changing and Eric and Tre’ have a pulse on where that world and theater are going. We’re excited to partner with Folk Productions to bring the next generation of globally commercial theater IP to life, and expand the appeal of that IP into television and other mediums.”
In a joint statement, Kuhn and Scott said their collaboration with Amplify will bring “new and original voices to the stage in exciting ways for audiences and artists.”
Amplify is perhaps best known for 100 Foot Wave, which recently picked up six Emmy nominations for its second season, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series, making the series HBO’s most nominated documentary project, series or film of the year. The first season won an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program. HBO recently announced it has renewed the docuseries for a third season.
Folk Productions, a creative studio based in New York City and London, will stage its debut production next month with the highly anticipated Off Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea starring Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott.
Gutenberg! The Musical!, written by Scott Brown and Anthony King and directed by Alex Timbers, stars Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells in a story about two aspiring playwrights who perform a backers’ audition for their new project – a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor, Johannes Gutenberg. The production began previews on September 15 at Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre, with an opening night set for October 12. The limited engagement runs through January 28, 2024.
The musical is produced on Broadway by Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Patrick Catullo, Bad Robot Live, Seth A. Goldstein, Isaac Robert Hurwitz, Kristin Caskey and Mike Isaacson, with Amplify’s Lewis co-producing alongside Inside Amy Schumer co-creator Dan Powell.
