“Road closures are in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area,” the spokesman said.
A shop assistant who works on Spring Street, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to fear for her safety, said police have blocked the area and are not allowing anyone to enter.
“I’m waiting on staff to get through and they can’t get onto the street,” she said.
“At around 8am the police told everyone to go back inside, it is a bit scary, I’m not sure if someone is still out on the loose.”
Another shop owner said he saw officers running into the Kmart Bondi Eastgate store about 9.20am.
“We saw police running into the centre about 20 minutes ago,” he said.
“They looked like they were chasing someone but we didn’t see anyone in front of them.”
More to come.
