For many going to a friend’s stag or hen weekend ends with a sore head come Monday morning.

But all that fun also comes with a financial headache, typically to the tune of £779 if the celebrations are in the UK or £1,208 if they are abroad, a survey suggests.

It found men splash out more celebrating their friends’ imminent nuptials – £920 on average for a UK stag weekend, compared with women spending £652 for a hen celebration. 

If going abroad, men spend £1,256 on average while women spend £1,158.

Around a third of those surveyed said they have declined a stag or hen invitation and in almost 80 per cent of cases this was due to the expense.

Some said they gave a different excuse to their host because they did not want to admit the truth.

A breakdown of costs for celebratory weekends included £151 for accommodation (or £228 if abroad), £112 (or £200) for food and drink, £85 (or £184) for transport and £99 (or £157) for gifts.

The survey of around 1,000 adults who have attended stag or hen weekends that were not their own was carried out for the insurer Aviva by Censuswide Research.
