May 7, 2023A WOKE rebrand of the Brecon Beacons in honour of an ancient king has been blasted — as he was a womaniser with 63 kids.
Bosses changed the name last month to Bannau Brycheiniog after fifth century regional monarch Brychan.
They also ditched a burning brazier from the logo in an attempt to better reflect their eco-friendly credentials.
But tourism bosses are angered by the name change, which translates as the Peaks of Brychan’s Kingdom.
Brychan — who had three or four wives — was also believed to have forced himself on the daughter of a rival king.
Ashford Price, who runs a complex of caves under the hills, said: “He really only has one very dubious claim to historical fame.

“He was a ‘notorious lecher’ who preyed on the women of his kingdom and may have fathered up to 63 children.
“He had an appalling record of treating women badly.
“I’m not sure park residents would want to be associated with him.
“The park authorities now have a major modern day moral dilemma in promoting the name.”

In old age King Brychan abdicated his throne and became a hermit.
Brecknock Beacons, later Brecon Beacons, is thought to have been used as a name since the 1700s.
