Rishi Sunak will today pledge to ‘give everything’ to preserve the legacy of the Good Friday Agreement – as the DUP hinted it might finally return to power-sharing.
In a speech in Belfast to mark the 25th anniversary of the peace pact, the Prime Minister will praise the ‘courage, imagination and perseverance’ of those who negotiated the deal.
‘Those qualities brought an imperfect but enduring peace to a place taught to believe no such peace was possible,’ he will say.
A major conference in Belfast to mark the anniversary has been overshadowed by the continuing stand-off over power-sharing, which has left Northern Ireland without a devolved government since February last year.
Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris yesterday piled pressure on the DUP to end its boycott of the Stormont Assembly. The party walked out last year in protest at the operation of the Brexit Northern Ireland Protocol.

DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson warned that his party would not be ‘brow beaten’ into returning to Stormont.
But other senior figures hinted the DUP could return to power-sharing in the summer.
Mr. Sunak will host a gala dinner tonight to be attended by a string of his predecessors.
