An ex-wife of the new man in the life of TV’s Yorkshire Shepherdess warned her: ‘Be careful, he broke my heart.’
Jan Coates, 72, was the fourth of five wives in the tangled romantic past of businessman Robert Davies, 71.
Speaking exclusively to the Mail she recalled how their marriage broke down after just two years when he ‘had an affair.’
Mrs Coates said: ‘That’s what he does, gets married, have an affair and move on.
‘He is very charming but he is also very ruthless in the way he treats people. I think he gets bored easily.’

Mrs Coates, a yoga teacher, said she wanted to speak out after reading about how Mr Davies had left his fifth wife Yusami, 56, to pursue a relationship with the TV celebrity Amanda Owen, 48.
She said: ‘I can see what’s happened. He loves fame and fortune and he loves money.’
Asked what message he had for Ms Owen, she replied: ‘Once somebody is in love with someone they don’t want to know. I would just say ‘be very careful and think about your children.’

‘I’m not being a woman scorned. But if he marries Amanda Owen he would be like Henry VIII with six wives and that’s not normal.’
Mr Davies, a website designer, and Ms Owen are said to be ‘inseparable’ despite their 23-year age gap.
But it was a very similar story for Mrs Coates back in the summer of 1998 when she met Mr Davies, a widower at the time, at a celebrity friend’s garden party in Leeds,
Her friend, who she has not named, was ‘being a match-maker with’ Mr Davies and a TV executive.
Mr Davies had lost his third wife to cancer and had a six-year-old daughter from that marriage as well as two older children, one each from his two earlier marriages.
He was working as a graphic designer and ‘love bombed’ Mrs Coates, a divorced mother-of-two.
‘He rang me up after the party and asked me out for a drink,’ she said. ‘We hit it off really well and the relationship progressed from there.’
A ‘charming romantic’, Mr Davies proposed at Christmas and they married the following September in a grand wedding at Dalhousie Castle, near Edinburgh.

‘He was the father of three children and three wives. Maybe I rushed into it, hindsight is a wonderful thing..
‘He wanted me to be the stepmother to his six-year-old daughter and it all happened very quickly.’
The couple moved from their home in Thorner, near Leeds, and bought a 14-bedroom bed and breakfast in the North York Moors which they transformed into a ‘relaxation retreat’ business.
Mrs Coates was in charge of yoga and relaxation therapies while Mr Davies ran the business side and did the cooking.
‘It was very lucrative and successful,’ she said. ‘He was very romantic and always taking me out to restaurants and buying me jewellery.’
But before long their marriage was on the rocks thanks to Mr Davies’s wandering eye.
‘He got a Valentine’s card from a local farmer’s wife, I knew she had designs on him.
‘I was extremely tired and vulnerable at the time and went off to Cornwall for a week off to see my sister.
A source close to Yusami previously said: ‘She is absolutely heartbroken by what’s happened. She can’t believe it’

‘I was quite suspicious then and thought something was going on because when I rang home the phone was constantly engaged.
‘When I got back I was determined to get to the bottom of things.’
He would also disappear to the woman’s house for ‘band practice’, as he played the guitar as a hobby.
Although at one point he did say ‘sorry,’ Mr Davies always denied cheating on her, she said. But a few weeks later her suspicions were heightened when a phone bill arrived.
‘There were about 27 calls to the same number in the village while I was away,’ she said.
‘A few weeks later he just vanished and took off for a week’s holiday, leaving his daughter with me. He never told me he was going, he just left.’
Mrs Coates said on his return she ‘filed for divorce as I knew he was up to something and having an affair.’
The four months that followed were ‘awful’ as they continued to run the business together.
‘I went upstairs to sleep in a yoga room. It was really hard working with him and I needed counselling and therapy as I almost had a nervous breakdown. It was tortuous really.’

She said he never admitted the affair ‘or affairs’ but ‘he was the talk of the village at the time.’
The divorce went through in early 2002 and Mrs Coates, who has one previous failed marriage, has little positive to say about Mr Davies.
‘He was a smooth-talker and seems caring but deep down he only does things for his own gain.
‘He made no effort with me as soon as he met this other woman.’
She said when their marriage was breaking down she contacted his first two wives.
‘Wife number two said ‘he’s not up to that again.’ So there clearly was a pattern.’
And when she returned to their marital home in Rosedale Abbey, North Yorkshire, there was ‘an Austrian woman staying with him who was clearly not just a friend.’

Ms Owen, a former model and mother-of-nine who has become famous from her starring role in the Channel 4 Yorkshire Shepherdess series, announced her separation from husband Clive, 68, in July.
She met Mr Davies through his work on her website in 2018. He is said to have admitted being in love with the TV personality after his Japanese wife found a handwritten note in his car.
Mrs Coates said: ‘I feel so sorry for her and devastated for Clive as well but I also feel sorry for Amanda Owen. Her fame and fortune will be attractive to him for sure.
‘I would say to her ‘look very closely at what you are doing and don’t rush into it.’
‘He has not changed in two decades. I am not vicious or vindictive but I would say he loves the chase for females and loves fame and fortune. But maybe they will suit each other.’
