Forget WFH… try working from the PUB! Chains offer remote workers WFP deals from just £10 a day – including lunch and a drink – as Britons flee their kitchen tables for more sociable venues

Working from the pub is becoming the new working from home as Britons flee to more sociable venues – and chains have noticed, with many offering deals from just £10 a day to attract remote workers amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Pubs will be desperate to attract customers amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, which is only set to worsen this winter. Among the issues facing hospitality businesses are soaring energy bills, rising food and drink prices, and Britons less inclined to spend.

In September, the government did introduce an energy support package, which gives businesses the ‘equivalent’ support for bills to that which households have received.

But many are arguing this will not be enough at a time when pubs are facing a doubling of their bills.

Consequently, many chains have introduced working from the pub deals in an attempt to attract customers who are also trying to escape their own rocketing home energy bills.

Education copywriter Jen has worked from the Cutty Sark pub in Greenwich, south-east London, for a few days a month since parent brewery Young’s introduced its £15 Work from Pub (WFP) packages in 2020.

The £15-a-day deal involves 185 Young’s pubs and varies across venues but can include a sandwich lunch and bottomless tea and coffee.

Meanwhile, Fuller’s is offering a lunch and a drink from just £10 a day across its 380 pubs.

Then, microbrewery pub chain Brewhouse and Kitchen is offering a ‘workspace’ option for £10 a day, which features WiFi, quiet spots, power sockets, unlimited hot and soft drinks, and printing.

The community co-working site Othership has a membership going for from as little as £25 a month, which involves pubs signing up to ‘host’ laptop workers.

Then, the independent Flintgate pub in Weybridge, Surrey has a £15 ‘work and play deal’ that offers use of power points, quiet stations, unlimited tea and coffee and lunch, and a pint or G&T sundowner at 5pm.

Luke McMillan runs flip-flop company Sea Sense from the Surrey pub. ‘I find working from the kitchen table soul-destroying,’ he told the Guardian. ‘The pub is great for its laidback atmosphere, and the best bit is that you get to bond with other pub workers over a beer at the end of the day.’
