My sister was critically injured in horror holiday crash – she's ‘worried sick’ for her boyfriend as he fights for life | The Sun

A YOUNG British woman critically injured in a horror holiday moped crash has told how she is “worried sick” about her boyfriend who is fighting for his life.

Brave Joella Senior has now been moved from intensive care onto a ward at the same hospital in Bali where her partner Alex Hoyle remains in a coma with head injuries and a broken back.

Her older sister Teya Brooker has told of both families’ heartache after the couple’s dream trip to the Indonesian island turned into a nightmare.

Primary school teacher Teya said: “My sister has the biggest heart and is worrying about everyone else, not herself. She said she is worried sick about Alex and knows the extent on his injuries while she is coping with her own."

“She is in so much pain herself and is exhausted but all she cares about is Alex and our families.”

Mum-of-two Teya from Corley, Warwickshire, who has spoken to her sibling by phone, said: “We’ve told her to stop worrying about us and that she needs to get better.”

Teya, 29, whose milestone 30th birthday is just weeks away, said: “We’ve got to look to the positive. She survived. But everything since the accident is such a blur.”

She told in a exclusive interview with The Sun Online how difficult it was to have a conversation with Joella, saying: “We try to talk but it’s hard for her. She is in so much pain and is exhausted so we keep it short and sweet but positive."

“She is aware Alex is in a really bad way and it is really hard for her because she can't see him. He’s still in intensive care.”

Teya, who has taken a career break to look after her baby daughter and toddler son, told their university lecturer mum Jeni Hall had flown out to Bali yesterday and had arrived safely.

She said: “Mum’s been amazing and very strong.”

Joella, a social media co-ordinator for various companies, suffered a broken back in the crash on the third day of their “holiday of a lifetime” in Kerobokan, North Kuta, on the evening of June 12.

The couple’s Honda Vario scooter was in a collision with a car and another moped.

Joella also broke both arms, collarbone and cheekbone and has a damaged lung.

Her sister said: “The punctured lung is a problem and is causing her delay returning home. We don't know when she will be fit enough to travel home.”

She added how thankful both families and friends were to the “incredible doctors” in the Balinese main hospital.

Joella’s ex-fiancé Luke Howitt told he is “hoping and praying that the pair make a full recovery and return home safely.”

He told how he had been communicating with his former girlfriend, he remains pals with, saying: “I’m trying to keep her spirits up. She has spinal and other injures and will need so much rest and physio."

“Alex is in a coma and his parents and sister are by his side."

“I haven't spoken to her about the accident but she knows how seriously injured Alex is. We all hope he pulls through and that they can come home together.”

Luke, 28, said that the huge response to the fundraiser – today (June 23) standing at nearly £81,384 of its £100,000 target to help pay for the couple’s medical bills was  “just amazing.”

The building refurbishment worker told The Sun Online how he remained friends with Joella despite their break up, and knows her new boyfriend.

He said: “We were together for 10 years but grew apart. That happens. But we are still pals, after having a bit of distance, and we share out two dogs together, and I am just hoping that she is OK and Alex too."

“She is in a lot of pain and she can’t see Alex. They have been a couple for at least all of this year, maybe before, and we are thinking of them both.”

The injured couple’s close friends Georgie Steel and Oli Rowland told in a new posting on the JustGiving fundraiser how Joella had made some progress following extensive surgery.

They wrote: “Joella's operations to repair her displaced fractures in both her lower arms, stabilise fractures to the vertebrae as well as plating her collar bone and cheek bone have all gone really well.

“Whilst the operations were a success, Joella's road to recovery is still very long and she finds herself in a tremendous amount of pain post surgery as her body tries to recover from the stress that the operations have put her under.”

The picture is bleaker for Alex who remains in a critical condition sedated in intensive care with “no timescale known for when he'll wake up."

They posted: “He is requiring many further operations including repairs to serious injuries to his jaw, cheek bone and temporal bones. There is still unfortunately a long way to go for Alex's recovery.”
