US top diplomat to visit Solomon Islands amid China pact concerns: report

America’s top diplomat for the Indo-Pacific will head to the Solomon Islands, weeks after it emerged the South Pacific island nation will sign a deal that gives China rights to send its military there.

Kurt Campbell, who serves as the National Security Council Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, will travel to the island nation, the Financial Times has reported.

The Solomon Islands have agreed to a security deal with Beijing that will allow China to take its first major diplomatic stake in the Pacific.

The deal, first flagged last month, comes after the Solomon Islands rejected days of lobbying from Australia and New Zealand to reconsider signing it.
