Ultimate humiliation for Park Slope progressivesMay 14, 2019
Workers of Park Slope, unite: You have nothing to lose but your chains!
At least, not the workers at the Park Slope Food Coop.
Yep, there’s trouble in that progressive paradise: The co-ops’ paid employees have charged their employer with unfair labor practices in a filing with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that The Man is trying to block them from unionizing.
The employees’ larger goals, The Post reports, include added staffing, better scheduling practices and more transparency from co-op bosses. To press those demands, they would join the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union — the same outfit that seeks to organize FreshDirect, Walmart and Amazon workers.
In the same class of “exploiter” as Walmart: What an embarrassment for the infamously left-leaning collective whose mission statement reads, “We strive to be a responsible and ethical employer and neighbor.”
In its 36 years, the co-op has boycotted everything from California grapes and Coca-Cola to a Brooklyn kosher-food producer — the last, because of its alleged unfair labor practices.
Members must put in regular hours laboring at the co-op to keep their rights to buy there, and management periodically cracks down on abuses such as sending the nanny to “volunteer” on your place.
But at least some of the 75 paid full-timers think members are still getting too good a deal at the workers’ expense.
The final humiliation, of course, is that the Park Slope Food Coop is staring at a citation for union-busting . . . from the Trump administration.
