Two men arrested after boy, 3, shoots and injures two-year-old sister in the chest with a gun he found in the couchMay 23, 2021
TWO men were arrested on Saturday after a three-year-old boy grabbed a gun that he found between sofa cushions and accidentally shot his two-year-old sister in the chest.
The girl was rushed to the hospital but is said to be in an "exceptionally" critical condition.
Three men were in the Lakeland, Florida house when the accidental shooting took place.
The men reportedly heard a “pop” and found that the girl was bleeding on the couch and that the boy ran from the living room crying.
As they rushed to the hospital, they reportedly crashed into another vehicle leading to further injuries.
A driver passing by stopped to assist and helped transfer the girl and one of the adults to the hospital, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at a news conference on Saturday, ABC News reported.
Judd said that when the girl was shot, it appears that the "projectile went downward through the pancreas, and maybe the large and small intestines and out the back."
She had one surgery and is expected to have others, he added.
The Department of Children and Families transferred the three-year-old boy to live with his grandmother.
“There was no reason to think that this was an intentional act. He was a baby playing with what he saw as some kind of toy,” Judd said.
Authorities said that one of the three men reportedly brought the gun to the house as he gathered with the other men to watch the NBA playoff game on TV.
FAILURE TO STORE A FIREARM
Twenty-three-year-old Kevonte’ Wilson told investigators that he hid the gun between the sofa cushions to be out of reach of the children.
"I don't know how you think you safely keep a gun away from children when you stick it between the couch," Judd said.
Wilson was arrested on charges of failing to safely store a firearm, possessing marijuana, and carrying a concealed weapon.
He could also face other counts, the sheriff said.
Chad Berrien, who owns the house, was charged with possession of marijuana and maintaining a house for drug use, Judd added.
The third man who was at home will not face charges, according to CNN.
Based on a Florida crime victim’s privacy law, authorities didn’t disclose the relationship between the children and the three men.
Their mother was reportedly at her sister's house at the time.
It is unknown if Wilson and Berrien had attorneys because an online court docket viewed by ABC News showed no cases for them.
