Inside London hotel from hell with pube-covered toilets, mouldy beds, holes in the walls and rats running riot

April 17, 2022

GUESTS have laid into a London hotel for its mildew-soaked beds, hole-covered walls, and having pubic hair all over the toilets.

Scores of scathing reviews reveal the "filthy" conditions at what several describe as the "worst accommodation ever" .

Two critiques even go as far as to say Gresham Hotel Bloomsbury is infested with rats, with rodents running riot.

Another, who stayed at the "grimy" lodge in the shadow of the capital's rich and famous, described it as "damp, smelly and dirty".

They wrote on Tripadvisor: "Pros – location as it has a roof to keep out the rain.

"Cons – a smelly, damp hotel with dirty floorboards, walls with holes in them, no internet, no drinking water, a grimy sink, and seemingly one hairdryer to share between the entire hotel.

"There is also a £10 fee to leave your bag behind reception for a few hours, incredibly squeaky beds, insufficient towels, a lack of bed covers, no shampoo, a shared toilet the size of a matchbox, and bedroom doors that don't lock.

"The price should be a pro, but the hotel was that bad that I think any money spent here would be regretted. I know I do."

The holidaymaker, named Aidan, who stayed in February 2020, went on to describe it as his "worst hotel experience ever" before warning: "Guests, beware."

Others have complained about having dodgy locks, no hot water and the lights not working.

Some claim the beds at the £99-a-night inn are so uncomfortable they "didn't get a minute's sleep".

And two, Sara and Mathilde, said they were "shocked and upset" to find rats in their rooms.

Alexander, who stayed at the guest house in December 2019, said: "Worst hotel ever. Don't be fooled by the relatively pleasant exterior and a decent location, you can't imagine how bad this place is.

"I made an eight-day booking online at this dreadful, dirty hotel as I foolishly didn't read the reviews.

"The rugs in the hallway are positively filthy, as is the toilet, complete with someone's pubic hair.

"There was no hot water, no heat, and no internet – even though they give you a number to write down, but the network doesn't exist.

"They have a 'television' precariously placed on the wall at the bottom of the 'bed' but no remote is provided and there is no way to turn it on so it's more of an ugly sculpture."

Alexander went on to say there was no soap or bath mat in the "tiny, disgusting bathroom" – only liquid hand wash that had been watered down.

"There isn't anything that could be called service in this dump," he added.

"The unfriendly staff couldn't care less about any of this.

"The uncomfortable cot that they laughingly call a bed was lumpy and it was virtually impossible to sleep on.

"After two days I refused to take another cold shower and put up with the filth so I checked out and found another hotel.

"'Terrible' is too good of a review for the loathsome Gresham Hotel."

The hotel, which has a two-out-of-five rating on Tripadvisor, sits in historic Bloomsbury next to the British Museum.

It is also just a stone's throw from the West End, the shops of Oxford Street and swanky Soho.

It is described as having "nicely appointed rooms" – but the reviews suggest they are anything but.

One guest, named Mark, said: "What a complete s*** hole.

"Disgusting rooms, filthy toilets and unusable showers – and no one gives a damn.

"The walls have holes in them and are filthy. Do not stop here."

Another agreed, describing it as "the worst place I've ever stayed".

"If you're considering staying here, I really urge you to think again," they wrote.

"The location is brilliant, but the 'facilities' are horrible, dismal and I felt unsafe there.

"My door had a dodgy lock and I hardly slept for worrying about it, and the lights also didn't work, so I returned to darkness at 1am. Nightmare."

Petals H, who reviewed the hotel in November 2021, also told people to "stay here at your own risk".

"The room was filthy, smelly and very shabby," she said.

"The bedding was stained and also had mildew on, and the carpet had brown marks and was threadbare in places and was probably the main source of the bad smell in the room.

"The shared toilet had brown marks on the door and no sink to wash your hands, so you had to go back to your room to wash your hands."

The overwhelming majority of reviews are negative, but several guests praised the hotel's central location, swift check-in process, friendly staff and budget price tag.

The Sun has contacted the hotel, which charges guests up to £299 a night and is listed as the 1,112th best hotel out of 1,206 in London, for comment.
