A SIX-year-old girl has died after she was raped by her cousin in India, it has been alleged.

Her death sparked furious protests which saw her family lay her body in the streets of Uttar Pradesh.

The girl was being treated in a Delhi hospital but the youngster died of her injuries today.

Her family placed the alleged victim's body on a road in India's Sadabad region and demanded the arrest of negligent police officers, local media reports.

Police arrested the accused Radharaman Pandey, 30, on the same day as the attack, according to the Times of India.

The girl was left at home to look after her siblings while her parents worked, it's reported.

While her siblings were outside, the 30-year-old allegedly assaulted the girl inside her home.

A neighbour reportedly heard the girl shouting and summoned the girl's mother who contacted local police.

Pandey was taken into custody and the six-year-old was taken to hospital.

Officer Aligarh Muniraj has been suspended for laxity when arresting the accused, according to local media reports.

Nearly 34,000 rapes are reported in India each year. The country's rape crisis has been under the spotlight since the 2012 gang rape and murder of Jyoti Singh, 23.

The attack, which saw the student raped and beaten by a gang of six twisted men, prompted thousands demanding stricter laws. Prison sentences were doubled to 20 years and voyeurism, stalking and trafficking of women was criminalised.

MPs also voted to lower the age at which a person can be tried as an adult for heinous crimes to 16 from 18.

Last month, a teenager was accused of raping an 18-month-old baby while her parents had left the house.

The girl's mum had reportedly "popped out" when the 19-year-old entered the home in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh.

Cops found the alleged rapist almost 70 miles away in the city of Jabalpur, where he was arrested.

A mother was gang-raped by armed robbers in front of her husband in the state of Punjab, it was reported.

A police complaint said the men scaled the walls of the home before taking the family onto the roof.

The group allegedly raped the mother of the family and robbed the home. They left with gold ornaments belonging to the family and 20,000 rupees (£212) in cash, it was reported.

In September, a tour guide was gang-raped by five men and a woman at a five-star hotel near the India Gate in Delhi.

At the time, police said the tour guide made the call the day after the incident, which happened in a hotel room.

The room had been booked under the names of two businessmen, according to reports.

Deputy Commissioner of Police New Delhi, Eish Singhal told NDTV: "On the victim's complaint, a case was registered against six accused persons including one woman.

"The victim was lured to the hotel room on the pretext of providing a loan at subsidised rates by the accused persons.

"The victim worked as a tourist guide-cum ticket booking agent and she was in dire need of money."
