Research: malicious programs-miners infected about 50 thousand websites

March 8, 2018

Criminals are massively mined by Monero.

In the study "Bad Packets report, 2018" by Troy Mursch, it is claimed that about 50 000 websites contain malicious programs for crypto currency mining.

Including, 5 541 websites are infected with WordPress.

Miners prefer to run Monero, as the program for mining this coin can be installed on conventional processors, rather than on graphics.

Some websites are already equipped with the option to refuse a maning, but many websites can not do this.

The ease of implementing Java-miners on websites attract criminals who started using cross-site scripting and other vulnerabilities to implement mining scripts on websites.

As a result, 4000 government websites were infected in the US, UK and Australia. The LA Times website, the Coinhive application, was also infected.

A study by Troy Mursch that of 48 953 sites on which it was discovered that they have scripts for coin mining, 39,925 (81,6%) used Coinhive.

Alternatives to Coinhive also gained some popularity, although at present they make up a relatively small share in the mining, reports Techrepublic.
