Bitcoin Features on The Ellen DeGeneres Show; “You’ll Either Be a Millionaire or Totally Broke”February 21, 2018
The celebrity comic Ellen DeGeneres recently talked about Bitcoin on her show and said no one really knows how it works.
In what can be taken as a sign of Bitcoin’s rising popularity, the leading cryptocurrency featured on the Ellen DeGeneres show, as the celebrity comic tried to explain what it is.
She began talking about the digital currency as something “everybody is learning about” but “nobody knows how it works”.
“Everybody is talking about Bitcoin, nobody understands it. It’s like a plot twist in a confusing movie. When you’re watching a movie and your friends are acting like they know what’s going on and you are like, ‘yeah, I do too’, and then you’re like what the hell is everyone talking about? I have no idea.”
She then went on to show a short video to the audience, starting with how “Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency”, but conceded that she didn’t know what that meant.
The famed comedian then compared Bitcoin to an adorable goat on her screen, which she may want to pet, but won’t be able to, since it is virtual – just like the digital currency, which is stored in digital wallets.
Finally, Ellen talks about how Bitcoin can increase in value, and you can profit from it, but if you invest in Bitcoin “you’ll either be a millionaire or totally broke” she concluded.

Ellen’s confusion about Bitcoin is understandable, since even people who follow the currency and the markets are mainly interested in its price rather than the technology behind it. However, with increased exposure, more and more people are learning about virtual currencies and researching the tech behind them.
Bitcoin rose to its all-time-high of around $20,000 (the price Ellen cites) in December 2017, but a correction followed afterwards, which saw its price dropping to $6,000 earlier this month. Currently however, the digital currency is trading around the $10,000 range, and this recent price volatility shows the speculative nature of the market.
