Petco offering a free upgrade to artificial-free pet food with May 18-19 trade-in events

Petco is offering an incentive to help pet parents move away from pet food with artificial ingredients.

This weekend, bring in any can or bag of dog or cat food with artificial ingredients to one of the retailer’s 1,500-plus locations and get a free artificial-free upgrade to a select product that meets Petco’s new nutrition standards.

The San Diego-based company stopped selling dog and cat food with artificial ingredients on May 1 in its stores and online, a move it first announced last November.

In a statement, Petco says it’s the “first and only major retailer of pet food and treats to take a stand against artificial ingredients” by removing products that don’t meet its standards.

Artificial ingredients includes artificial colors, flavors and preservatives.

Petco has said that products with those ingredients add up to roughly $100 million in sales, but it believes the healthier foods and snacks that replace them will minimize any financial loss.

“We know choosing between so many pet food options can be a confusing and daunting task,” said Nick Konat, Petco co-chief merchandising officer, in the statement. “We stopped selling foods with artificial ingredients because we believe it’s the right thing to do, and we want to make decisions easier for pet parents.”

U.S. pet owners are increasingly feeding fresh food to their pets. Some order pre-proportioned meals of meat and vegetables or frozen raw meat online.

In exchange for bringing in a bag or can of food, get a free nutrition consultation with a Petco-certified food specialist and up to a six-pound bag of dog food or up to four pounds of cat food. You can also choose three cans, cups or pouches of cat food.

There’s a limit of one trade-in per species per household on in-stock items only, according to the promotion’s fine print.
