Girl, 6, Killed When Little Brother Grabs Gun From Center Console and Shoots Her Accidentally

April 15, 2019

A 6-year-old girl is dead after her younger brother accidentally shot her in the head with a loaded handgun he found in the console of the family’s car.

“We want to remind everyone to keep their firearms unloaded and secured in an area away from children to ensure that this never happens again,” Paulding County, Georgia, Sheriff Gary Gulledge said in announcing the girl’s death.

Gulledge added: “Our hearts break for this family and we hope God puts his healing hands around them during this difficult time.”

A GoFundMe campaign created on behalf of the family identified the victim as Millie Drew Kelly, and said “at a young age, she knew that Jesus is all she ever needed and wanted you to feel the same too. She shared his love, mercy and grace to everyone she met.”

Police said that Millie and her 4-year-old brother were inside the vehicle that was parked in the driveway of the family home as the family was loading up to leave shortly before 6 p.m. on April 8. But when the vehicle wouldn’t start, the mother got out to investigate.

Then she heard the gunshot.

“Detectives determined that the 4-year[-old] male sibling retrieved a handgun from the console of the vehicle and accidentally discharged it, striking his 6-year-old sister in the head, fatally wounding her,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The girl died two days later.

“Millie Drew gave life today by donating her organs to continue to show the love of Jesus, whom she loved with everything that she had,” according to the GoFundMe page. “The outpouring of love shown towards the Kelly family from friends and community is exactly what being the hands and feet of Christ is.”

“Please continue to uplift this family in prayer,” it continued. “They are going to need us in the days, weeks and months to come more than ever. Finally, we ask that you go and love others as Millie does! Smile a Millie size smile and hug someone with all you got!”
